Peterborough sits on the Contoocook River at the junction of Route 101 and Route 202. Jaffrey lies to the south, below Mount Monadnock.

North along the Contoocook valley are Hancock, Bennington, Antrim, Deering and Hillsborough, with Francestown and Greenfield to the east. South and east toward the Massachusetts line are Temple, Sharon, New Ipswich, Rindge, Greenville, Mason and Windsor.

Geography

Mount Monadnock rises above Jaffrey and Dublin at the western edge of the market. The Contoocook River runs north from Jaffrey through Peterborough, Bennington, Antrim and Hillsborough, and the Souhegan River rises in New Ipswich and Greenville.

Landmarks and open space

The Wapack Range — including Pack Monadnock and North Pack Monadnock — runs along Temple, Sharon and Greenfield. Crotched Mountain stands near Greenfield and Bennington, and Lake Monomonac sits at Rindge on the Massachusetts line.

Transportation and access

Route 101 runs east to west through Temple, Peterborough and Dublin toward Keene. Route 202 runs north to south from Hillsborough through Peterborough and Jaffrey to Rindge and the Massachusetts line, and Route 124 and Route 123 cross the southern towns.
