Dover is a city on the Cocheco River, with mill buildings above the falls. Rochester is upriver to the northwest, and Somersworth lies between them on the Salmon Falls River at the Maine line.

Durham, to the south, is the home of the University of New Hampshire. The market also includes Barrington, Lee, Madbury, Rollinsford, Strafford, Farmington, Milton and Middleton.

Geography

The Salmon Falls River forms the Maine border along Rollinsford, Somersworth, Milton and Middleton. The Cocheco River runs from Rochester through Dover to the tidal Piscataqua system, and the Oyster River reaches Great Bay at Durham.

Landmarks and open space

Great Bay meets the market at Durham. Inland, Bow Lake lies in Strafford, the Milton Three Ponds in Milton, and Swains Lake in Barrington.

Transportation and access

The Spaulding Turnpike (Route 16) runs from the Portsmouth area north through Dover and Rochester. Route 108, Route 4 and Route 202 carry local and regional traffic. Amtrak's Downeaster stops in Durham and Dover.
