Keene is a city in the Ashuelot River valley, with Main Street running south from Central Square.

North and east are Surry, Gilsum, Sullivan, Nelson, Stoddard, Marlow, Alstead and Harrisville. South and west along the river are Swanzey, Winchester, Hinsdale, Chesterfield, Westmoreland and Walpole, with Marlborough, Troy, Dublin, Fitzwilliam, Richmond and Roxbury in the higher country toward Mount Monadnock.

Geography

The Ashuelot River runs from Marlow down through Keene, Swanzey and Winchester to the Connecticut River at Hinsdale. The Connecticut forms the western boundary at Hinsdale, Chesterfield, Westmoreland and Walpole.

Landmarks and open space

Mount Monadnock rises to the southeast above Dublin and Jaffrey. Spofford Lake lies in Chesterfield, Dublin Lake in Dublin, and Surry Mountain Lake just north of Keene.

Transportation and access

Route 9 runs east to west through Keene between Concord and Brattleboro, Vermont. Route 12 carries north-south traffic from Walpole through Keene to Troy and Fitzwilliam, and Route 10 follows the Ashuelot valley south to Winchester and Hinsdale.
