Understanding the area

About the area

  • The Connecticut River and the Vermont crossings
  • Mascoma Lake at Enfield and Lebanon
  • The Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge

Hanover and Lebanon anchor the New Hampshire side of the Upper Valley, across the Connecticut River from Norwich and White River Junction, Vermont. Hanover's downtown adjoins the Dartmouth College green.

North and south along the river are Lyme, Orford, Piermont, Haverhill, Plainfield and Cornish. East of the river, Enfield, Canaan, Grafton, Orange and Dorchester run into the hills of inland Grafton County.

Geography

The Connecticut River forms the entire western boundary and the Vermont state line. The Mascoma River runs from Mascoma Lake at Enfield down through Lebanon to the Connecticut, and Mount Cardigan rises above Orange and Canaan.

Landmarks and open space

The Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge crosses the Connecticut River at Cornish. Mascoma Lake lies at Enfield and Lebanon, and Canaan Street Lake sits above the village in Canaan.

Transportation and access

Interstate 89 runs southeast from Lebanon toward Concord, and Interstate 91 runs along the Vermont side of the river with crossings at Lebanon and White River Junction. Route 10 follows the New Hampshire bank north through Hanover, Lyme and Orford, and Route 4 heads east through Enfield and Canaan.
